Minding the gap

How to take action to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be…

I have recently been thinking a lot about this topic, maybe because it’s a new year and it seems we’re finally seeing our way out of the COVID19 pandemic. It’s sometimes really easy to have clarity on the things we don’t want in our lives, but I hadn’t really spent as much time to get clear on what I do want to call in to my life, and where I want to go. So I have spent the past few days really giving this thought. I was inspired by US based entrepreneur and success coach, Dean Graziosi, who teaches the following model:

Get totally honest about exactly where you are right now – this is the starting point for any real change. Sometimes some areas of our lives work really well and others may not be a source of fulfillment for us. So what areas do you feel need more attention?

Get really clear on what you want. What is your compelling life vision, and what will it look like and feel like once you’ve achieved it? Really envision it in the areas of health, family life, relationships, career and finances…the clearer you get, the better! Try to do this in a positive mindset, because your emotional state affects your ability to imagine and call to action.

What’s your ‘why’? Get absolutely clear on why this vision of your future is important to you...your ‘ why’ is the pull factor to get you through the tough times. For example, would getting into great shape give you more energy to spend with loved ones? Or more time to see children grow up?

What’s the gap? Now between where you are and where you want to be there will be a gap. It’s helpful to break this down into steps…what action steps do you need to take to get to where you want to go?

Not ‘how’ but ‘who’? Instead of getting overwhelmed with the ‘how’ of getting there, think instead about ‘who’? Who do you need to call in to assist you? Who can provide the resources you need? Do you need to join a gym or get a personal trainer? Go on a course or learn a new skill from an expert? Who are the people you need to surround yourself with?

Now take action! Commit to taking daily action towards your goal/vision. It’s only through committed regular action that we move towards the life we envision.
